  2. Are You Falling into the Trap of Predatory Sponsorships? As a content creator, you constantly find yourself having to navigate through scams and people trying to take advantage of you by getting free advertising for their products. Many creators and live streamers dream of reaching a certain level where they can easily secure sponsorships from all directions and rake in the money. Unfortunately, that often proves to be nothing more than a trap as old as time itself. The Culture on Twitch: Easier Support, But at a Cost The culture on Twitch is one where viewers are more inclined to support their favorite creators by subscribing, sending tips, and making it easier to show their appreciation. However, one of the ways this support comes about is through on-stream advertising of various games, services, or products. While these sponsorships may seem lucrative, they often require you to advertise items that may not align with your own preferences or those of your audience. We've all seen the typical sponsorships for games like Raid Shadow Legends, meal delivery services like Hello Fresh, editing software like Marvel Snap, grooming products like Manscape, and countless others. Sometimes, we tend to overlook the fact that these endorsements have infiltrated our favorite streamers' content. The Trap of Predatory Sponsorships Though some content creators do receive compensation for these sponsorships, there are many more who are being taken advantage of in the process. Lately, most of the sponsorships offered through programs like Streamelements are of a predatory nature. They involve advertising items or products that have a more general appeal, rather than catering specifically to your content or audience demographics. I receive offers like this all the time, but I've never been inclined to accept them. My audience is incredibly important to me, and subjecting them to products or services that I haven't used or had a positive experience with just doesn't sit right. After all, my content is worth more than what these offers are bringing to the table. Let's take an example: a company wants me to dedicate prime space on my channel page for five days and commit at least two hours of stream time to their product, for what could potentially be a very minimal payout. Considering the horror stories shared by others who have gone through similar requirements and faced difficulties in getting paid, the amount of work involved just isn't worth the hassle. Sponsorships: A Win-Win Scenario In an ideal sponsorship scenario, a company pays a content creator to promote their product to their audience, leading to higher returns as the audience is more likely to make purchases. However, the programs that offer these predatory sponsorships are nothing more than disguised affiliate marketing tactics. They often result in free advertising for the company, with little consequence for the content creator or their audience. While the money may seem tempting in the short term, it can ultimately harm your own content in the long run. It's better to be patient and ignore these offers, instead reaching out to companies that align with your values and will genuinely benefit you and your growing community. Conclusion As independent content creators, we must be vigilant and discerning when it comes to sponsorships. Don't fall into the trap of predatory offers that can compromise your authenticity and alienate your audience. Take the time to seek out genuine partnerships that will enhance your content and benefit both you and your dedicated community. Remember, the real value lies not in quick and easy money, but in building a trusted brand and fostering a loyal following. Stay true to yourself, be selective about the collaborations you engage in, and watch your success soar. Q/A Section: How can predatory sponsorships harm your content? By accepting predatory sponsorships, you risk compromising your authenticity and alienating your audience. If you advertise products or services that don't align with your preferences or your audience's interests, you may lose their trust and credibility. This can have a long-term negative impact on your content and hinder its growth. What should content creators prioritize when considering sponsorships? Content creators should prioritize their own values, their audience's preferences, and the potential mutual benefits when considering sponsorships. It's essential to choose partnerships that align with your brand and will genuinely enhance your content. Building trust and loyalty among your audience should always be a top priority. How can content creators find genuine sponsorship opportunities? To find genuine sponsorship opportunities, content creators should proactively reach out to companies they believe in or whose products/services they have used and had positive experiences with. It's important to build relationships based on shared values and common goals. Networking within your industry and leveraging your existing community can also lead to authentic sponsorship opportunities.

  4. Been working on bringing all of the sites I run, under one banner. Going through the outliers of the different projects I had been running like, The Indie Basement site will be redirected to its section here within the blog. I've already shut down the Indie Creator Hub Mastodon instance and the Owncast server. This isn't to say that they were failures, more along the line in that there were too many outlets in which I had to keep up to date with. As a one man show, there's only so much I can do at any one time. Everything will be silo'd through This Indie Creator in which I'll be linking out to Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads. My focus will be growing our community here. So going forward live streams will be going through the indiebasement.live Owncast server in which the streams will also be multicast out to Twitch, Live Space and eventually SharePlay.
  5. πŸ”΄ Building the OwnCast Community 🟩 This section underscores my belief in the power of community building for OwnCast, a different kind of streaming service. I invite you to join the OwnCast Rocket Chat channel. Here, we can connect and brainstorm ways to uplift the platform and its content creators. I can't stress enough how vital a supportive community is, and I've personally benefited from this kind of help within our group. I also want to share exciting plans like a newsletter and spotlight content creators to enhance the OwnCast community further. I encourage you to get involved and help us grow this passionate community of alternative platform users.
  6. You've might have seen the announcement that Substack is offering creators/podcasters a way in which you can directly upload videos to your page. Using a bit of magic in that the video, especially if it is a podcast episode, can be transcribed, split into a na audio only stream and placed as a new post all on its own. Is actually pretty cool. I wanted to know what the gotcha's were as this sounded a bit too true to be believable. https://support.substack.com/hc/en-us/articles/21093671091220-Guide-to-video-episodes-on-Substack That sounds great but, I wanted to know what you would have to give up or even how much all of this would be priced at. From what I can see is that there is no cost to the creator, just have to have your content living on Substack's infrastructure is all. What caught my eye though was the following. These restrictions are really livable for a platform to offer video hosting and storage essentially. With the maximum limit of 20GB, this is big, as many other places have a limit of maybe 10GB at the most. And that's a rare find. What are your thoughts with Substack getting into the video hosting side of things? Does it bring itself to be a competitor to other platforms?
  7. 1. Introduction Decentralized social networking platforms like Mastodon have garnered significant attention in recent years. Offering an alternative to the algorithm-driven feeds and centralized control of platforms like Twitter, decentralized platforms empower users to connect, collaborate, and create within their communities. However, with this shift comes a range of reactions from people, some feeling overwhelmed while others wholeheartedly embrace the decentralized nature of these platforms. In this chapter, we delve into these reactions, explore the importance of educating and encouraging creators on these alternative platforms, and highlight the directory feature on Owncast that enables users to discover and support different servers and channels. 2. Overwhelm or Embrace: The Dichotomy of Reactions As Mastodon and other decentralized social networking platforms gain momentum, it's essential to acknowledge that not everyone finds these new landscapes easy to navigate. Some individuals feel overwhelmed by the lack of familiar features and the need to adapt to a new system. Transitioning from centralized platforms can be daunting, especially for those accustomed to algorithm-driven feeds that tailor content to their preferences. However, amidst these challenges lies the opportunity for independent creators, live streamers, and content creators to embrace the decentralized nature of these platforms. 3. Educating and Encouraging Creators One crucial aspect of the widespread adoption of decentralized platforms is educating and encouraging a new generation of creators to join the movement. As established creators navigate the complexities of alternatives like Mastodon, they play a pivotal role in sharing their experiences and insights with others. By showcasing the benefits and possibilities offered by decentralized platforms, these creators inspire a more diverse ecosystem of content and collaboration. It is through their guidance and encouragement that we can foster a thriving community that embraces the principles of decentralization. 4. Discovering and Supporting Different Servers and Channels A powerful feature that sets platforms like Mastodon apart is the ability to explore and support various servers and channels through Owncast's directory feature. This feature enables users to discover communities aligned with their interests, ensuring that they can connect and engage with like-minded individuals. By actively seeking out new servers and channels, independent creators, live streamers, and content creators can expand their reach and find audiences who appreciate and value their unique perspectives and content. 5. Shifting Mentality: Embracing the Decentralized Feed Transitioning from centralized platforms to decentralized ones requires a shift in mentality. Instead of relying on algorithms to curate content, users on Mastodon and similar platforms have greater control over what they see and engage with. This change empowers individuals to curate their feeds, based on the communities they join and the people they follow. While it may take time to adjust, this newfound agency offers a refreshing departure from the echo chambers and algorithmic biases often associated with conventional social media. 6. The Increasing Migration to Alternative Platforms As ongoing issues and controversies persist on mainstream platforms like Twitter, more people are likely to migrate to alternative options. The desire for greater privacy, reduced exposure to misinformation, and an authentic community experience drives individuals to explore decentralized social networking platforms. Alongside Mastodon, other viable alternatives such as Blue Sky, Spoutable, Threads, and more, provide a variety of choices for individuals seeking meaningful connections and creative opportunities unfettered by centralized control. Conclusion As the popularity of decentralized social networking platforms continues to grow, independent creators, live streamers, and content creators must consider these alternative avenues. While initial challenges and overwhelm might deter some, embracing the decentralized nature of platforms like Mastodon presents countless opportunities for creative expression, collaboration, and authentic community-building. Educating and encouraging a new generation of creators to join these alternative platforms is pivotal to ensuring a diverse ecosystem of content thrives. With powerful features like the directory on Owncast, discovering and supporting different servers and channels becomes effortless, expanding one's reach and fostering connections with like-minded individuals. As we anticipate the migration of more users to alternative platforms, now is the time for creators to embark on this decentralized journey and embrace the variety of choices available. Q/A Why do some individuals feel overwhelmed when transitioning to decentralized social networking platforms? What role do established creators play in the widespread adoption of decentralized alternatives? How does the directory feature on Omcast facilitate community discovery and support? 8. https://matrix.org/blog/2023/11/28/shutting-down-bridge-to-libera-chat/ Matrix.org Foundation, in collaboration with Element and Libera Chat, has announced that they are unable to bring back the Libera Chat bridge online. All clean-up tasks such as clearing ghosts are expected to wrap up by December 22, 2023. For users reliant on this bridge, alternative solutions are recommended. These include running their own bridge through matrix-app service-irc software. However, users are urged to pay heed to the network while doing so and take into account the recommendations from Libera Chat and their Matrix FAQs. The decision to shut down the bridge came after months of effort from Matrix.org and the Element team to address raised issues. Despite all their efforts, the desired results couldn't be achieved in a timely manner. The development, maintenance, and operation of the Libera Chat bridge had been donated to the community by Element, limiting the capability and staffing to consistently prioritize work on the bridge. Resolving the introduced issues and restoring the bridge are still on the cards, provided the necessary work is done and key improvements are made. In the long run, Matrix.org hopes to allocate resources to sustain its core programs and to provide additional community services like bridge maintenance and operations. However, being an open-source foundation early in its development journey, Matrix.org admits its resources are limited, requiring it to make difficult choices about resource allocation. The foundation acknowledges all involved parties for their dedication to community service and regrets the current situation, hoping for improved circumstances in the future.

  15. The world of social media is constantly evolving, with new platforms rising to prominence while established players struggle to maintain their positions. In recent months, one such platform that has been making waves is Mastodon. Initially launched in 2016, this open-source, decentralized platform has gained a significant following as people seek an alternative to the dominant social media giants. 1. Twitter's Missteps and Mastodon's Opportunity What's interesting is that Mastodon's growth has been largely driven by Twitter's missteps. Following a number of controversies and scandals, many users began to lose faith in the platform and started looking for alternatives. That's where Mastodon came in - offering a fresh approach that emphasized privacy, community-building, and decentralized control. 2. Unique Features and Sense of Community The platform's popularity has soared in recent months, with millions of new users signing up in a short space of time. Many have been attracted by Mastodon's unique features, such as the ability to create "instances" or customized communities within the larger platform. Others have been drawn by the sense of community that Mastodon fosters, with users supporting each other and building connections across diverse interests and backgrounds. 3. Twitter's Decline and Impact on the Social Media Landscape But Mastodon's rise has also been facilitated by Twitter's own missteps. Recently, Twitter announced that it would be closing its API for all third-party apps, a move that has impacted many developers and smaller apps. This comes after months of declining user numbers and increased scrutiny of the platform's practices. While Twitter's decline may not be solely attributable to Mastodon's rise, it's clear that the platform has played a significant role in shifting the social media landscape. As Mastodon continues to grow and attract new users, it will be interesting to see how other platforms respond and adapt to this changing environment. Will they seek to emulate Mastodon's decentralized approach, or will they double down on their existing models and try to retain their user base? Conclusion: Embracing Control, Privacy, and Community Regardless of what happens next, it's clear that Mastodon has tapped into a growing desire among users for more control, privacy, and community in their online interactions. By offering an alternative to the established players, it has given users a new sense of agency and ownership over their online lives. As social media continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how Mastodon and other emerging platforms shape the future of our digital world. Q/A How has Twitter's decline influenced the rise of Mastodon? Mastodon's growth can be attributed, at least in part, to Twitter's missteps and controversies, which caused many users to look for alternatives. What are some unique features of Mastodon that attract users? Mastodon offers the ability to create customized communities called "instances" and fosters a strong sense of community across diverse interests and backgrounds. How might other social media platforms respond to Mastodon's rise? Other platforms may choose to either emulate Mastodon's decentralized approach or double down on their existing models in an attempt to retain their user base.
  16. In today's fast-paced digital world, independent creators, live streamers, and content creators are constantly seeking new avenues to connect with their audience. With more creators joining forces and leveraging the platform's unique features, such as the ability to circumvent algorithmic limitations, Owncast has the power to challenge the dominance of established platforms by offering a refreshing alternative. 3. Navigating Challenges: Gaining Traction Beyond Twitch and YouTube While Owncast presents exciting opportunities, it's essential to acknowledge the challenges faced by creators venturing beyond platforms like Twitch and YouTube. Building an audience from scratch can be a daunting task, requiring dedication, consistency, and effective marketing strategies. However, for those willing to invest the time and effort, Owncast offers an environment where they can cultivate a more engaged and genuine community. Creators are increasingly seeking alternatives that allow them to break free from the confines of mainstream platforms. By embracing Owncast, content creators can bypass the algorithms and ad-driven systems that often hinder visibility and monetization potential. 19. As someone who doesn't typically delve into platformers, I approached Ageless with a tinge of skepticism. However, this captivating game managed to pleasantly surprise me with its engaging gameplay mechanics and visually stunning pixel art. Let's start with the graphics. Ageless embraces the nostalgic charm of pixel art, delivering visuals that are not only visually pleasing but also commendably detailed. The backgrounds are beautifully crafted, adding depth to the immersive experience without overshadowing the gameplay. Whether you find yourself exploring lush environments or conquering challenging levels, the graphics never fail to impress. But Ageless doesn't just rely on its looks. The gameplay mechanics serve as a solid foundation for the game, offering smooth and precise controls. Even as a newcomer to the genre, I quickly adapted to the platforming challenges. The game strikes a satisfying balance between difficulty and accessibility, making it enjoyable for both seasoned players and newcomers alike. One aspect that truly stands out is the game's background music. The soothing and melodic soundtrack perfectly complements the gameplay, enriching the overall experience without becoming repetitive or overwhelming. It truly creates an immersive atmosphere that draws you deeper into the game world. However, I must acknowledge that there were certain elements that didn't resonate with me as much. While the mechanics were enjoyable, there were moments when the overall experience felt slightly less entertaining. This could be subjective, as someone who isn't typically drawn to platformers, but it's worth noting. Furthermore, as a puzzle enthusiast, I found that Ageless may not cater specifically to that audience. Some puzzles require numerous attempts to solve, which may frustrate players seeking a smoother puzzle-solving experience. While this aspect adds to the challenge and may appeal to some, puzzle enthusiasts might find themselves spending more time on certain levels than anticipated. In conclusion, Ageless is a platformer that excels in both visual aesthetics and gameplay mechanics. Its pixel art style and captivating background music create a world that is both nostalgic and engaging. Whether you're a platforming enthusiast or a casual gamer, Ageless offers an enjoyable experience that shouldn't be missed. 20. Live streaming continues to grow in popularity, with more creators broadcasting across multiple platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook. Managing the chat from each platform can be challenging when trying to engage with your audience. This is where Social Stream comes in handy. Social Stream is a browser extension available for Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox. Once installed, you can link your accounts from YouTube, Twitch, Trovo, Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, and more. Social Stream will then pull the live chats from each platform into one unified window. Having all chats in one place makes engaging with your audience much easier. You can see new messages as they come in no matter which platform they originate from. The interface is highly customizable as well - you can show/hide source icons, enable dark mode, change font colors, and more. Some key features of Social Stream: See up to 200 message histories to look back on older chats Auto-reply to common greetings like "Hi" Horizontal scrolling of messages Fade out messages after a set time period Feature-specific messages in a floating overlay Beyond consolidating chats, Social Stream has chatbot functionality too. You can set auto replies to frequently asked questions to manage engagement. The on-screen chat overlay lets you showcase particular messages on your stream layout. For anyone multi-streaming across platforms, Social Stream is a game changer. Streaming is all about engaging with your audience in real-time. Social Stream makes managing multiple chats simple, helping you better interact with viewers no matter where they are watching from. The customization ensures your chat feed looks great with your specific branding and aesthetics too. Give Social Stream a try to step up your chat experience. The browser extension can drastically improve your ability to monitor and respond to chat messages, letting you focus on creating great content.
  21. Welcome back to another episode of the Independent Creator Podcast. I'm your host, Josh, inviting you to join us tonight for an exciting discussion on Owncast, an ongoing community initiative that kicked off today. Owncast is on the minds of many today. And why shouldn't it be? It's an open-source, free platform β€” perfect for anyone seeking a space for their content. What's more, it's user-friendly; a simple, plug-and-play solution. All you need to consider is the hardware or server it will be hosted on. If you're joining us via our own Owncast server, we're thrilled to have you. This platform is an innovative way to regain control of your live-streamed content. Reminiscent of our previous discussions on the platform, and our advocacy for content ownership, Owncast champions a similar ethos. It provides a hub for creators to host their live-streaming content. Once hosted on your site, you're then able to share it across social networks like Mastodon, Twitter, or Blue Sky, amplifying your reach. One exciting aspect of owning your content is live streaming, and this is where platforms like Owncast, Twitch, YouTube Live, Facebook gaming, and upcoming SharePlay come into play. Undeniably, Owncast has fantastic potential, as discussed in a previous episode where we demoed setting up an Owncast server with a web hosting company. And while it is free, the success of your Owncast server hinges on powerful hardware infrastructure or a reliable web hosting service. Today, I'm enthusiastic to share news about a community initiative that's just been launched to involve more contributors to the Owncast community, particularly, those proficient in theming and customization. As often noticed, many users stick with the default theme when launching their Owncast server. Take us, for example; our theme is far from default. We encourage those fluent in CSS to experiment with theming for your Owncast server. For instance, the 'Twitchy' theme by Tainted Cipher gives your Owncast server a Twitch-like look, a refreshing departure from the default theme. Let's briefly cover how easy it is to change themes: within your Owncast admin, simply navigate to the configuration in general, then select 'Appearance.' Here, you can play with colors and other aspects of your Owncast Server layout. And if by any chance you want to revert to the default settings, the reset button is waiting to be clicked. The great thing about this community initiative is that it brings together people of diverse skills and interests. As we approach 2024, I, alongside the creators of platforms, see this as an opportunity to grow communities around these alternative platforms, standing apart from mainstream ones like Facebook and Twitter. It feels like a breath of fresh air. To wrap up today, I'd like to share some updates. As part of a housekeeping exercise, we're centralizing all our live streams to Owncast. Furthermore, we're also migrating all the content from the Indie Creator Hub to our main site, thisindiecreator.com. This consolidates all our blog posts, game reviews, and other resources. We're confident this move will simplify the experience for our followers. I sincerely thank each and every one of you for being with us tonight. The audio podcast version of this episode will be available from tomorrow morning on your choice of platform, be it Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Podcasts, or others. Remember, only two more episodes remain for this year. Keep checking our website at thisindiecreator.com for updates. Until next time, have a good night!
  22. In today's video, join me as we dive deep into the world of locally-based and cloud-based chatbots for streamers. I shed light on what makes both sides unique and why they are two sides of the same coin. We start our journey by examining locally based bots; these are programs installed on your computer that you initiate before starting your stream. I walk you through some of their unique features and discuss the boundless possibilities this system offers. We take a peek at some incredible features like customized sound effects, automated responses, scene changes, and personalized entry sequences for regular viewers. We'll talk about Firebot, a locally installed chatbot, along with glimpses into the incredible work of streamer 'Nutty'. Nutty's mind-blowingly inventive ideas show you how you can use these bots to create interactive experiences for your viewers. Then, we change gear and shift our gaze to cloud-based chatbots. Streamlined, user-friendly, and versatile, cloud-based chatbots are installed on servers elsewhere rather than on your computer. The ability to create triggers, call-backs, and shout-out commands, while simpler, still holds vast possibilities. We'll also explore some popular cloud-based chatbots like Nightbot, Moobot, Beatbot, Stream Elements, and Botrix and discuss their features. 24. Introduction: As the field of content creation continues to evolve, new tools and technologies are emerging that promise to make the process faster and more efficient. One such tool is ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. In this blog post, we'll delve into the pros and cons of using ChatGPT for content creation, helping content creators make an informed decision about integrating this tool into their workflows. Pros of Using ChatGPT: Time-saving capabilities: ChatGPT can quickly generate content ideas, write headlines, and even create entire articles, allowing content creators to focus on other aspects of their work such as research and promotion. Enhancement of creativity: By generating new and interesting content ideas, ChatGPT can help content creators break out of creative ruts and explore new topics and formats. Overcoming writer's block: Writer's block is a common challenge, but ChatGPT can alleviate this problem by providing ideas and serving as a starting point for content creation, getting the creative juices flowing. Improved content quality: By generating headlines and article structures, ChatGPT can ensure that content is well-organized and easy to read, leading to higher engagement and positive feedback from readers. Cons of Using ChatGPT: Lack of personal touch: One potential drawback of using ChatGPT is that it may lack the personal touch that many content creators strive for. While it can generate ideas and write articles, it cannot replicate the unique voice and style of an individual creator. Potential for inaccuracy: ChatGPT, being a machine, may not always be accurate. It can make errors or generate ideas that are not relevant or useful, requiring human oversight and editing. Dependence on the tool: Relying too heavily on ChatGPT for ideas and inspiration can hinder creativity and originality, leading to a lack of fresh perspectives in content creation. Cost implications: Using ChatGPT comes with a cost, particularly for new or budget-conscious content creators. The API access key from OpenAI may be an investment that some content creators might not be able to afford. Conclusion: While ChatGPT offers numerous advantages for content creators, including saving time, enhancing creativity, alleviating writer's block, and improving content quality, it is important to be aware of the potential limitations. These include the lack of personal touch, potential inaccuracy, dependence on the tool, and associated costs. Content creators must consider their own needs and goals when deciding whether to incorporate ChatGPT or other AI-powered tools into their content creation process.
